What is the mission of a place like the Stony Brook Center for Biotechnology? The Center’s most basic goal is to facilitate connections between the academic world and the business world. It’s often harder to do than people think because neither side knows how the other thinks a lot of the time. Both operations director Diane Fabel and former director Glenn Prestwich use the metaphor of translation when talking about the Center’s work — academic and business cultures are different, and the Center’s role is to act as a bridge between the two.
